"Composition of colostrum can vary considerably, and not just in the immunoglobulin content. There are still improvements that can be made in its feeding and management, especially on smaller dairies that do not have the resources of larger dairies. Larger dairies, however, are challenged to be consistent in their feeding and management of colostrum."
Dr Al Kertz, board-certified, independent dairy nutrition consultant.
How is the raw colostrum processed?
In order to receive maximum benefit from your Colostrum Supplement it is important to know the advantages of various processing techniques used by the manufacturer. The goal of any Colostrum Supplement should be to mimic the real product.
Is the Processing facility designed for colostrum processing only?
Was the plant designed for the sole purpose of producing the best quality colostrum and colostrum fractions? Many products are produced in old dairy factories which were not originally set up to process colostrum. This can lead to colostrum been overheated during pasteurization, which can cause denaturation of the proteins in the colostrum and destroy the efficacy of the end product. The colostrum should be collected both fresh and frozen and stored below 40°F before processing. If frozen the colostrum should be thawed and homogenized to restore the casein micelles, which prevents damage to the proteins.
Why do companies only discuss IgG levels. What about the Level of Proline-rich Polypeptides (PRP) and other critical components?
Immunoglobulin (IgG) levels are generally considered to be the primary measure of colostrum quality and effectiveness for gut health. IgG levels should be tested and certified at all stages of production, measuring not only levels of IgG but bioactivity as well. This is important as many commercial types of colostrum have very low bioactivity for their IgG due to poor processing procedures. Other than gut health, it is the importance of the content and quality of the PRPs to the overall health of the body. These are precursors to immune and cytokine modulators in the body, and have a profound effect on the animals ability to fight off viral and bacterial infections. The Colostrum Supplement should contain the maximum possible levels of PRPs.
Defat or not defat?
The only reason to remove the cream is to increase the levels of Immunoglobulin’s in the final powder. Some believe that leaving in the cream is an important component of the colostrum that contains oil soluble growth factors and other bioactive nutrients. Leaving the cream in the colostrum, however, may cause significant problems. The cream can turn rancid, giving the colostrum an unpleasant odor and degrading its effectiveness. A company using a priority method of processing has been able to stabilize the colostrum cream and prevent the colostrum from going rancid. It has been known for some time that rancid fats can deactivate some of the biologically important components of colostrum, such as Vitamin A.
Is colostrum from First and Second milking only?
First and second milkings after calving are the richest in immunoglobulin's, growth factors and protein peptides. Only first milkings should be collected after the calves have had their colostrum. Manufacturer's should not accept watered down or third and fourth milkings.
Antibiotic free?
All of the colostrum collected should be from US Grade A dairies and certified antibiotic free.Every batch should be tested to ensure a standard quality.
Solubility?
The Colostrum Supplement should be agglomerated to ensure consistently sized particles which will dissolve rapidly in liquids.
What Quality assurance is guaranteed?
Is the Colostrum Supplement processed using “Good Manufacturing Processes” (GMP), and is it Health Certified with the USDA? Is the facility registered with the FDA, and is the laboratory registered with the US Government as a clinical laboratory? How often is a microbiological analysis conducted on each batch prior to shipment, and does the product pass through a metal detector and powder sifter according to FDA HACCP parameters?

Strong beef calves start with a mother in peak health. It is a true balancing act to provide proper nutrition to beef cow's while also keeping their digestive systems healthy. Veterinarians and nutritionists are focusing more attention on intestinal health as well as rumen health. Optimizing Feed and nutrient utilization is key to her Immune Status. If good nutrition is not in place she will fail to meet her genetic potential and her Calf will develop serious health problems.
Challenge-Enteric disorders, pathogenic agents, anti-nutritional factors and the use of new by products.

A cow with a compromised Immune System may affect her calf in the following ways?
- Health problems caused by scours or respiratory disease result in poor growth.
- Health problems add cost to prevent and treat diseases. Poor health leads to an increase in morbidity and death-loss.
- Pathogens destroy gut health and integrity. This leads to a decrease in absorption of vital nutrients and thus performance.
- Immuno-suppression leads to major economic loss in any operation.
- Depressed milk production resulting in lower weaning weights.
Natures Solutions to enhance the Cow's Immune System naturally.
When a cow becomes sick, one or more components of her immune system have not performed adequately. The goal for any producer is to help support the cow's immune system and allow her to regain her health so that she can reach her genetic, production and reproduction potential. The efficiency of the immune response relies not only on specific recognition of foreign antigens, but also on the nutrition status of the cow. Beef producers should take advantage of natures solutions to ensure that the cow and calf's immune status are at peak performance.
Mos: Supplementation with Mos has demonstrated a positive affect on a number of immune functions. Mos has been shown to improve the Immunoglobulin levels in colostrum. It has been shown to reduce morbidity/sickness in cows thus ensuring her immunes status is optimal at calving. Passive immunity from the antibodies provided by the cow's colostrum is critical for building immunity in baby calves.
Lactobacillus bacteria: Gut-associated Immunity is critical to disease resistance. Lactobacillus can survive through the digestion process and compete with pathogenic bacteria and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the lower intestine.
Bacillus Subtilis: has been shown to promote a healthier intestinal environment, which helps reduce the pressure from enteric disease. Bacillus Subtilis grows in the digestive tract and produces large quantities of digestive enzymes to aid the digestion of farm feed. Bacillus Subtilis also competes with pathogenic bacteria for space on the intestinal wall.
Yeast: stimulates fiber-digesting bacteria, stabilizes rumen environment and utilizes lactic acid. Yeast targets enhanced rumen function, improve fiber digestibility, dry matter intake and helps your cows during periods of heat stress.
Minerals: Appropriate intake of key minerals and vitamins is essential for beef cattle productivity and health. Strong immune systems, reproductive performance and calf weight gain are all influenced by mineral and vitamin nutrition. While subclinical deficiencies often go unrecognized, they cause a reduction in growth and efficiency and depress the immune system. Proper mineral and vitamin nutrition contributes to strong immune systems, reproductive performance, and calf weight gain.

Nature allows Beef producers to utilize these natural growth-promoting substances in response to consumer demands for natural farm feeds.
If one looks at the tragic nature of diseases in our world, there is no incentive so great and no medicine so powerful as hope for a better tomorrow. Nicholas made us promise before he died that we would one day help his family and fellow South Africans. He believed in the power of “giving back”. It shines like a beacon throughout humanity. It cuts through the oceans that divide us and brightens the lives of all it touches.

There is nothing more empowering than a cause WHOSE TIME HAS COME. MicroBasics is committed to honoring Nicholas’ wishes in providing hope for a better tomorrow. At the start of 2012 MicroBasics introduced Immutides to four Orphanages in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Immutides has shown dramatic results in people suffering with HIV.
Mark Kane-Berman said " He is humbled to be able to carry out Nicholas' goals of having a positive impact on other people's lives and especially young children whom Nicholas always helped". MicroBasics is experiencing rapid growth. With every single pallet of product sold a certain amount is donated to purchase Immutides, which will be distributed to various orphanages around Southern Africa.
Cleaning the feed chain from pathogens and Mycotoxins is a daunting task.
The presence of pathogens in poultry production is a costly occurrence for producers and can occur in all segments of the feed process, all the way up to the production of live birds. Eggs and poultry meat are major sources of human food borne Salmonellosis. There is increasing antimicrobial resistance within pathogens and their prevalence and virulence is continuing to be a major challenge worldwide.

Mycotoxin are inherent dangers that may potentially be found in any farm feed. The key for any poultry producer is to ensure that these factors cause minimal impact on the birds consuming them. Mycotoxins are a major enemy to the Immune system . The combination of different mycotoxins produce a greater negative effect on health and productivity of birds than they do individually, because of their synergistic ,additive or antagonistic characteristics.
Natures offers some alternative Solutions in order to prevent proliferation of pathogenic bacteria and minimize harmful side effects of Mycotoxins.
Bacillus Subtilis spores are emerging as a leading class of probiotics for poultry. It grows in the digestive tract and produces large quantities of digestive enzymes to aid the digestion of feed. It benefits intestinal morphology, suggesting increased capacity for nutrient absorption by the bird. Bacillus Subtilis also competes with pathogenic bacteria for space on the intestinal wall.
Yeast sources and nutritional co-factors have bioregulating properties on the intestinal flora and possibly an antagonistic effect towards pathogens in young and older poultry. Yeast fed to broilers improved body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio. It is also evident that yeast improves egg production, egg weight and egg quality while lowering mortality rates.
Lactobacillus bacteria are micro-organisms which establish and maintain a well balanced gut microbiota and allow producers to Cultivate health from within. This balance is key to efficient nutrient utilization and resistance to enteric diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria invading the gut. Intestinal flora and nutrition demand true balance.
Beta Glucans/Mos Purified Beta Glucans are known to modulate gut-immunity and reduce inflammation The ability of Mos to decrease the prevalence of intestinal pathogenic bacteria and to prevent their colonization of the gastrointestinal tract is well documented. The combination of these components has shown improvement in the ratio between the length of the villi and depth of the crypt.
Enzymes improve nutrient digestion and reduce digesta viscosity. The greatest benefit of enzyme technology is the ability to enhance nutrient utilization in the diet. Corn and small grains contain valuable nutrients locked up within the grains cell walls. Improvement in nutrient digestion reduces the risk of the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the gut of poultry.
Increasing numbers of Poultry Producers are making disease prevention and health maintenance a priority in their operations. MicroBasics meets this need by the recognition of the importance of nutrition on immune function. Today Nutritionists and Veterinarians increasingly seek prevention of disease for many problems...These problems are increasingly known to be rooted in immune function.
Feed Costs-Feed is the most expensive item your cows consume every day. Optimizing Feed efficiency is the key to maximizing profit. If good nutrition is not in place she will fail to meet her genetic potential and she will develop serious health problems.
Challenge-decreased milk production, feedstuffs undigested in her manure.

Unlock the full potential of your Farm Feeds.
MicroBasics has recognised the trend towards a natural, non-drug efficiency alternative for the Dairy Industry. Dairy Essentials comprises of efficiency tools which enable farmers to better utilize their farm feeds. Increased Feed Costs have made it critical that dairy cows utilize all dietary fiber components in farm feeds, and especially more effective use of low quality forages and by-products. Dairy Essentials makes this possible.
Natures Solutions: It’s all about the bugs.
Fiber is a key element to Dairy Farm Profitability. Nature has given Dairy Farmers the following efficiency tools which improve rumen fermentation, animal performance and better utilization of farm feeds. Research has shown that a balanced, well functioning rumen is vital for digestion and nutrient uptake and ensuring the flow of feed and forage through the rumen for maximum performance.
Enzymes help to eliminate a potentially rate limiting step in rumen metabolism-the conversion of various fibers to intermediate compounds that feed functional rumen bacteria. Enzymes enhance fiber utilization in the diet and allow effective use of lower quality forages and by-products. Aspergillus Oryzae stimulates fiber-digesting bacteria, stabilizes rumen pH, and reduces heat stress.
Bacillus Subtilis grows in the digestive tract and produces large quantities of digestive enzymes to aid the digestion of feed. Bacillus Subtilis also competes with pathogenic bacteria for space on the intestinal wall.
Yeast stimulates fiber-digesting bacteria, stabilizes rumen environment and utilizes lactic acid. Yeast targets enhanced rumen function, improve fiber digestibility, dry matter intake and helps your cows during periods of heat stress.
Lactobacillus bacteria in addition to Mos appeared to reduce the incidence of HBS in some high producing dairy cows. Lactobacillus can survive through the digestion process and compete with pathogenic bacteria and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestine.
It is a true balancing act to provide proper nutrition to high producing dairy cattle while also keeping their digestive systems healthy. Veterinarians and nutritionists are focusing more attention on intestinal health as well as rumen health.
Nature allows dairy farmers to utilize these natural growth-promoting substances in response to consumer demands for natural farm feeds.

Farm Feed that benefit Neonatal gut health.
Optimal nutrition is the cornerstone of good calf health. When calves are young the goal is to feed the gastrointestinal tract. Science has shown many times that if that young animal gets sick, the gastrointestinal tract never recovers. If we can keep the animal from getting sick, there’s a huge amount of money we can save later on. Calf Essentials is focused on gut health, while benefiting feed efficiency, may have a greater benefit in reducing morbidity and mortalities and thereby improving farm profitability
The greatest challenge for farm feed today is to ensure that the animals are fed the correct product/feed, at the correct stage of life and at the recommended dose. On many of the farms today language is the greatest challenge in ensuring products are used correctly. Welcome to the genus of COLOR CODED CALF REARING! The system is as simple and basic as stopping at a traffic light!

Years of research has revealed that nature applies certain underlying principles in a spectacular variety of life cycles. Nature has many important lessons for us to learn and we need to cherish these lessons. In our pursuit to Feed the Globe we have placed severe pressure on our animals ability to survive in a world of dangerous pathogens, molds and toxins. Our animals are dependent on their immune systems to neutralize and destroy these potential dangers. To achieve this nature has developed many strategies that attack or neutralize these dangers in a wide variety of ways. Nutrition provides a potent array of factors to stimulate and modulate the immune system.
A Strangler fig is a large and fast-growing tree with a fascinating life history. It begins its life as a parasite as its seed lodges in the cracks and crevices of the bark of a host. The seed germinates and sends out air roots. These air roots take in nutrients and water from the air and host tree.
Every second of the day our animals are waging a silent war against billions of Viruses, bacteria, pathogens and parasites. Their Immune System faces many challenges-stress, allergens, nutritional deficiencies, free radicals and medication. Just like the Strangler Fig starts to attack its host, dangerous pathogens, molds and toxins weaken our animals immune system and their ability to recover.
Eventually the air roots grow to reach the ground and develop their own underground root system, independent of the host tree. The stranglers send out many thin roots that snake down the trunk of the host tree or dangle as aerial roots from its branches.
Symptoms of these challenges are:
-
A compromised Immune System causes a greater likelihood of infection.
-
A decline in feed efficiency followed by weight loss.
-
Increased susceptibility to stress and poor reproductive performance.
-
Bleeding and ulcers in the digestive tract result in reduced nutrient absorption.
Without a primed and effective immune system your animals health is in serious jeopardy and vulnerable to many diseases.
When the roots reach the ground they dig in and put on a growth spurt, competing with the host tree for water and nutrients They also send out a network of roots that encircle the host tree and fuse together. As the roots grow thicker they squeeze the trunk of its host and cut off its flow of nutrients. Eventually the host dies from strangulation, insufficient sunlight and root competition, and the strangler fig stands on its own. A hollow center is all that remains of the host.
In the end these harmful side effects have a negative economic impact on any operation. Just like the Strangler Fig, when the immune system fails, infections increase and performance decreases. In order for disease to occur the Immune System must have failed. Do not underestimate the importance of your animals having a strong and healthy immune system. We need to utilize the tremendous healing powers available in nature and nutrition and harness them in the correct balance.
